Radiant Heating

Radiant Heating Systems in The Northland Region

Radiant heating systems are an efficient option for home heating

Radiant heating systems are so named because they transfer warmth by radiation from one object to another. Unlike forced-air heating systems that warm a room quickly by filling it with heated air, radiant heating systems typically raise room temperature more gradually.

J&RS are your local experts for radiant heating installation, replacement, and repair. We can upgrade your existing heating system to a highly efficient radiant heating system that will improve your home's energy use! Why choose radiant heating

Whole-house radiant heating systems are often divided into different heating zones, giving homeowners control over which rooms get the most heat. This allows you to only heat the areas that are in use, saving you money on heating costs by eliminating the need to heat unnecessary parts of your home.

Are you or a family member prone to allergies and respiratory ailments? A radiant heating system may be your best option for a home heating system that will maintain clean indoor air. Unlike forced-air heating systems that can circulate dust and other airborne irritants, radiant heat doesn't require air to be blown around.

Types of radiant heating systems

There are several different types of radiant heating for houses, but they all work on the same principle and offer the same advantages.

Electric baseboard heating

Electric Baseboard Heater

This type of heating system works just like the heating coils on top of an electric range. The electric current runs through a resistant material, causing it to heat up. Aluminum fins on an electric baseboard heater increase the surface area of the heating unit to improve convective and radiant heat transfer.

Hot water baseboard heating

Hot Water Baseboard

Also known as hydronic baseboard heating, this is the most common type of radiant heating for homes. Hot water supplied by a boiler is pumped into pipes in baseboard radiators, forcing cooled baseboard water back to the boiler for reheating. Closely spaced fins on the pipes promote heat radiation and also heat transfer by convection.

Old-fashioned radiators

These bulky, upright radiators can still be found in some older houses. They were typically supplied with steam rather than with hot water. Because it takes more energy for a boiler to produce steam, these systems are not efficient. That's why they're usually replaced with modern hydronic baseboard radiators or compact, wall-mounted radiators.

Radiant floor heating

Radiant Floor Heating

All radiant heating systems depend on thermal mass as a means of storing and radiating heat. In a hydronic radiant heating system, water provides the mass. With radiant floor heating, also known as underfloor heating, the flooring material provides the thermal mass.

Hot water (hydronic) radiant floor heating works by circulating warm water beneath the finished floor in long runs of plastic pipe. With electric radiant floor heating, electric heating cable is installed beneath the finished flooring. Electric radiant floor heating isn't practical as a whole-house heating system due to its high energy usage, so it's most often used in bathrooms as a heated tile floor.

Infrared heaters

Infrared Heater

Infrared space heaters can be electric, propane, or gas-fired, and their portable nature makes them convenient for instant heat in areas like patios, garages, or bedrooms. Most models of infrared heating systems are portable, compact units that are perfect for short-term heating solutions.

By generating infrared light to produce heat, infrared heaters provide an instant warming effect similar to the warmth felt when sitting in direct sunlight. When it comes to supplemental or short-term heating, these units can offer efficiency, flexibility, and fuel savings.

Wood heating

Wood Stove

Wood and pellet stoves are a budget-friendly supplemental heating source that will help you cut back on the gas or oil expenses that fuel your main heating system. A wood burning stove will provide a large amount of heat close to the stove, but distribution throughout the whole home will not be as even as it will with other heating systems. This means that a wood or pellet stove can be very beneficial if you spend most of your time in rooms near the stove or only have a very limited space to heat.
